Developing sustainable tourism model
The ST4SD project provides technical support to develop policies and promote sustainable tourism destination and product development in three provinces: Ha Giang (in the northern mountainous region), Quang Nam (along the Central Heritage Road), and Dong Thap (in the Mekong Delta). The provinces were chosen based on local government commitment, alignment with the province’s current tourism development plan, and opportunities to promote sustainable tourism development.
Based on research and evaluations, the project selects to support the development of tourism models suitable for each local condition: community tourism in Ha Giang, agricultural tourism in Quang Nam, and ecological tourism in Dong Thap. In each locality, the project will choose a model site to provide support and then replicate the model to other locations.
The project supports national and provincial tourism management agencies in implementing innovative ideas to promote and communicate sustainable tourism. The project’s innovation program will also collaborate with existing initiatives to optimize effectiveness and create a positive impact on Vietnamese tourism.
Additionally, during the project’s implementation, experts from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) will share Swiss expertise in sustainable tourism development and lessons that can be applied in Vietnam.
Green Tourism Certification
The ST4SD project supports Quang Nam province to review and adjust its set of green tourism criteria to be suitable for actual situations and tourism business conditions. This set of criteria will be a guidance for companies to implement green practices, a measurement for them to self-evaluate, and a foundation for assessment and monitoring of green tourism practices. The project will also develop a guideline to instruct the operations of green standards and organize training courses for tourism enterprises.
In addition, the ST4SD project assists tourism companies to approach and participate in internationally recognized sustainable tourism certificates. The application of green standards and the awarding of green certifications help tourism businesses to enhance their reputation, attract tourists who have responsibility for environmental protection, and contribute to building a brand of sustainable tourism destination for Quang Nam province.
