Following up on the previous update, the three-day sustainable tourism training course held in H\u00e0 Giang (now part of Tuy\u00ean Quang province) from July 2\u20134, 2025, offered a rich blend of theory and practice tailored for professionals and local actors in the tourism sector. The program served not only as a platform for knowledge transfer but also as a catalyst for transforming how tourism is planned, managed, and experienced at the grassroots level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Program Designed for Real-World Application<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led by Dr. \u0110\u1ed7 Tr\u1ea7n Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng<\/strong>, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Tourism at Hanoi University of Culture, the training offered a well-structured blend of foundational knowledge, strategic insights, and hands-on approaches. The content was specifically crafted to reflect the needs of H\u00e0 Giang province and align with national and international sustainability goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The curriculum focused on four key areas of knowledge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Fundamental knowledge of sustainable tourism and sustainable tourism development<\/strong>:
    Participants gained a strong understanding of core concepts and frameworks, including the definitions of sustainability, the Triple Bottom Line approach (economy\u2013society\u2013environment), and the VICE model (Visitors\u2013Industry\u2013Community\u2013Environment).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Sustainable community-based tourism (CBT)<\/strong> \u2013 a strategic priority for H\u00e0 Giang:
    The course explored what makes CBT successful and sustainable in remote areas, emphasizing local ownership, cultural preservation, environmental protection, and fair benefit-sharing mechanisms. Particular attention was paid to identifying and addressing the \u201c5 available\u201d, \u201c5 missing\u201d, and \u201c5 conflicts\u201d commonly found in CBT development in ethnic minority communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. International and Swiss experiences and models in sustainable tourism development<\/strong>:
    Drawing on case studies from Switzerland and other countries, participants learned about best practices in visitor management, eco-certification, capacity building, and market positioning. These insights were used to stimulate discussion on how to adapt successful models to the Vietnamese and H\u00e0 Giang context.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. State management of sustainable tourism development in H\u00e0 Giang and Vietnam<\/strong>:
    The course also addressed the role of government in creating enabling policies, coordinating stakeholders, monitoring environmental and social impacts, and supporting communities through training, infrastructure, and partnerships.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Field Visits: Learning from Living Examples<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To bring theory into practice, the training included on-site visits to three representative CBT models:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Hmong Village Resort (previously in the district of Qu\u1ea3n B\u1ea1)<\/strong>: An ASEAN Green Tourism certified destination, showcasing responsible tourism infrastructure and community participation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • N\u1eb7m \u0110\u0103m Village (previously in the district of Qu\u1ea3n B\u1ea1)<\/strong>: Known for its efforts in cultural preservation, ethnic minority leadership, and homegrown tourism management practices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Tha and H\u1ea1 Th\u00e0nh Villages (H\u00e0 Giang, now part of Tuy\u00ean Quang)<\/strong>: CBT models integrating ecological awareness with traditional lifestyles, offering visitors immersive experiences with nature and local customs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      These excursions allowed participants to observe success factors firsthand, assess challenges, and exchange ideas directly with the communities involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Greater confidence in contributing to state-level planning and local-level implementation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        One participant remarked, \u201cThis course changed how I think about tourism. It\u2019s not just an industry\u2014it\u2019s a way to build pride in our culture and take care of our land and people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        At the end of the course, participants completed a final assessment and received certificates of completion. Many expressed hope that the lessons learned would not only stay with them but also ripple out through their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Several participants proposed concrete follow-up actions, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Creating cultural visitor codes for their villages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Developing community-led weekend tourism events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Partnering more effectively with travel agents and NGOs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          These initiatives signal a readiness to put theory into practice and to lead tourism development from the ground up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Looking ahead, participants voiced a collective desire to see similar training programs expanded to other provinces in the northern mountainous region. Given the shared socio-economic and geographic characteristics across these areas, the H\u00e0 Giang experience may serve as a scalable model for building capacity and resilience in Vietnam\u2019s emerging destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
